Heartwings Love Notes 290 - Decorating The Tree

Heartwings says, “Memories are half the fun of Christmas.”

Eagerly I begin unwrapping and unpacking the decorations we stored away last January. What a treat to greet them again. Many of them have a history that comes to mind as I pick them up. Many are gifts from family or friends. As I take each one from its box or container the images of their faces rise into my mind.

My mother’s idea of a lovely Christmas tree was one decorated with silver balls, white candles or lights, and silvery strips of tinsel. I’m different. I love colored lights. I cherish the bright, varied collection of wood, glass, cloth and even plastic ornaments Stephen and I have collected in our time together. After all the years I spent as a child decorating with tinsel I have grown tired of it.

I do love decorating trees. One year I thoroughly enjoyed myself decorating three of them: One for my Great Aunt Alice, too infirm to do it herself, one for my family because they were all off doing something else, and one for my parents who were too busy to make the effort. I also remember being quite tired by the end.

Now our mantel is lined with wonderful Santas in all sizes and colors; other living room shelves have been cleared of their usual decorations and instead hold more Santas and related Christmas icons. The sweet little Crèche figures we brought back one year from Mexico have an honored place in our dining room. The South American cloth nativity from my daughter hangs on our front door.

My decorations are an outward and visible manifestation of happy memories of Christmases past. As I look around and contemplate the evidence of the season I am reminded of its ability to renew and refurbish my spirits, to replenish my thirst for celebration and most of all to help me to shine forth the joy I feel at the coming of this wondrous season of peace and light.

May you enjoy your Christmas preparations and also appreciate the results.

Blessings and Best Regards,
Tasha Halpert
