Heartwings Love Notes 298 - Loving Myself Enough

Heartwings says, "When we love ourselves enough, anything is possible."

I would think I was all recovered from my recent abdominal distress and then the cramps would return. My homeopathic nurse practitioner and I tried different remedies. I would feel better only to experience pain again. Clearly I needed to work harder to understand what my body was trying to tell me.

I began to eat my old "gentle to your stomach" diet: yogurt, fruit gelatin, applesauce and bananas with occasional hot cereal. It helped quite a lot. I found myself craving hot water. I kept the kettle warm, a steaming mug next to me. As I felt even better, while still eating lightly, I added vegetables, fish and salad. What I also discovered was that I wanted only small portions.

Food and love are inextricably mingled in my mind. I have always enjoyed showing affection for friends and family by cooking. Stephen and I buy each other treats for Christmas and special occasions; we celebrate by going out to eat. Whenever I feel stressed I tend to show myself love by eating. Yet I was beginning to see that now loving myself might mean eating differently.

Old habits had to be dismantled and replaced. My body's message was clear: less food must be taken in. Simpler, more easily digestible food was preferable. Snacking while I cooked must go. Also I was aware that I usually ate too fast. Remembering that the more saliva that is incorporated into food the more easily it is digested, I found myself choosing to eat more slowly.

Coincidentally, as we worked together my homeopath came up with the correct remedy for my ailment. I feel almost completely well. However, I have vowed to continue to focus on what I have learned. Now when I am tempted away from my new regimen I tell myself I love myself enough to eat differently than I used to, and so I will.
