Heartwings Love Notes 301 - Growing With Love

Heartwings says, "The seeds we plant will grow best when watered with love."

My son Robin would have been forty-six this February. The years since his passing have accumulated like snowflakes on my windowsill, yet his memory is still fresh in my heart. Each year at this time just for fun I grow some carrot tops in a saucer by the sink. As they put out their feathery green I think of how he loved the earth and how lovingly he tended his vegetable garden.

Whenever he took anything from it to cook and eat, he always gave something back—whether fertilizer or some extra tender loving care. He felt strongly that it was wrong to take without giving. He felt close to nature and appreciated the natural cycles of planting, growth, harvest and rest. Most especially he liked to grow his own food.

I honor his memory in a variety of ways. Often I give donations to organizations in his name. When I write poetry I think of him, not only because he was a poet himself as well as an artist of considerable talent but also because it was his passing that inspired me to begin to write poetry again regularly as a memorial to him.

As I look at the little bits of green as they begin to emerge from the carrot tops floating in their water I can almost hear his merry laugh and see his twinkling eyes. Because I asked him to help me, many years ago he grew the seeds for my first garden, including the cabbages that nourished us that summer. They were the last seeds he grew on earth.

This year, together with some special friends, Stephen and I are planning to have a vegetable garden. Although Robin is not there to start the seeds, one of us is good at that and will be able to. I feel as though Robin would approve of this effort and perhaps from where he is he will lend a hand in making our garden grow.
