Heartwings Love Notes 313 - Little By Little We Learn

Heartwings says, "It takes time and persistence to created a positive habit."

At first I would leave my cloth shopping bags in the car and not remember until too late at the supermarket checkout. In time I would realize by the time I reached the door of the supermarket that I had forgotten them. Then I'd return to the car to get them. Eventually as I was walking from the car I would remember. Finally it has become automatic that when I open the car door I reach for the bags.

Now that I can consistently remember the bags for food shopping I am practicing for other stores. Actually, a few plastic bags now and again are useful. I don't want to run out completely. However, I now return home with fewer and fewer of them. This makes me very happy: not only am I helping the environment but I have also made an improvement in my personal habits.

My next task is remembering to take a glass of water before a snack or a meal. Once I incorporate this habit into my daily life I will not only drink more water I will also eat less food. My goal is to do both. This will make it easier for me to reduce my portions and I will imbibe sufficient water to keep my body running smoothly. Now even when I forget at first, I drink water afterward.

It's not easy to keep this new habit in mind. Normally I either forget completely or remember only after my mouth has wrapped itself around something tasty. Still, even when it is too late, at least I have remembered. That is something to be thankful for. The next step of course is to be aware as I am reaching for the food. Then I will really be on my way to incorporating this new and healthful habit into my daily life.
