Heartwings Love Notes 852 - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Heartwings says, "Time is a strange accordion that plays a familiar tune."

Yesterday the maple tree outside my bedroom window gleamed bright gold. It shone in the sun; its leaves had turned brilliant in the night. I observed it with joy in my heart. Then the wind began to blow quite hard, and the leaves began to shake and then to fall, littering the ground with their brilliance. Next week I have a birthday, and I began to think how my years have over time, like those leaves, fallen and been swept away.

I have no regrets—well, maybe a few small ones but none of significance. What seems so odd to me is how the years that have passed have somehow dwindled and shrunk in my mind. It seems only yesterday that I was celebrating my 30th birthday. My family was young and so was I. So much has changed since; so many people I knew and loved have gone on to live their lives far away from me, or have passed on into another one. Like the leaves of the maple tree, these dear ones shine in my memory.

Time as perceived by the mind is subjective. Time as reflected in the pages of the calendar is implacable. In my conversations with others I no longer number my years because people look at me and say, "I had no idea you were that old." While this is a compliment, it is also followed by a change in attitude which implies there is something frail and delicate about me because of my age. My late mother used to say, "You should be proud to tell people." However as the saying goes, "pride goeth before the fall," and I'd rather this didn't happen.

Today as I look out at the Maple tree, I see that there are still leaves left for the sun to shine through. As I look forward to tomorrow, I feel sure that I have many years left to enjoy and find ways to be useful. While much has changed for me as well as with me since that 30th birthday, like the tree outside my window I am still growing and hope to do so for all the time I have left. I cherish the years that have been, appreciate those that are, and look forward to the ones to come with joy and anticipation.

May you find much to appreciate in your life now and much to look forward to.

PS How do you celebrate your birthday? I hope you find fun ways to do so. If you wish to, please share your thoughts on birthdays. I so appreciate your emails and always hope to hear from you.
