Heartwings Love Notes 926 - Obligations are Important Reminders

Heartwings says, "Holy Obligations are our duty to ourselves as well as to God."

We live during a time of rules we must follow, whether we really want to or not. How many of us are missing the physical presence of loved ones! We long to hug our parents, our grandparents, our children, and our friends. We miss our daily routines, the shopping, the visits to the library, and the myriad actions of daily life we always took for granted before. We live in a new normal, and it won't change any time soon.

Even when it does, we will remember and life will still be somewhat different for us all. We will most likely be thankful for what we had forgotten was a blessing. Our obligations now revolve around making sure to wash our hands frequently if we are out and about and when we return. Masks, once the province of doctors, dentists and nurses are seen on the faces of young and old. We have a holy obligation to protect ourselves and others from a tiny enemy we can't see but will feel if it strikes us down.

When I was a child I learned about holy obligation: a duty we were supposed to perform, like eating fish on Fridays and going to church on Sundays. These new obligations are a duty to ourselves, to others and to the One who watches over us and cares for us. It is the part we play for our own best treatment of ourselves and others. It is holy not only because it is important but especially because all life is sacred.

Grumbling and complaining about the difficulties these holy obligations cause doesn't help us cope better, quite the contrary. When we come from a place of feeling like a victim, our perception of life is much different than when we come from a place of responsibility and caring. Then a holy obligation is just that, an act of love and caring for ourselves and others. Taking responsibility for our actions is an important part of growing up and becoming wise. In time to come the lessons we are all learning from this tiny enemy may be more valuable to us than we realize.

May you perform your holy obligations in good spirit and stay safe as you do.

How are you doing in this crisis? What do you miss most that you once took for granted? I'd love to hear from you and promise to write you back, even if not immediately.
