August

August begins with a strong emphasis on blessings of all sorts, some unexpected, some coming in the back door, so to speak. Retrograde Mercury for most of the month insists on actions that begin with "re" such as revise, repeat, respond, report, and more. Try to avoid buying anything new, most especially electronics or machinery, unless you absolutely have to. More than anything else be mindful of the tendency to deceive yourself either because of wanting something too much or trying too hard to push something away. If you resolve to strive for clarity you will emerge this month having learned a number of useful lessons.

On the 1st expect the unexpected when making choices, and be careful not to overeat or overspend.   On the 2nd, Mercury turns retrograde, creating opportunities for more surprises, alas not all of them positive. Mars moves into Cancer on the 3rd, signaling the importance of caring for our parents and our families. On the 5th it joins up with Neptune to frame a potentially strange reaction that could emerge via the media. This first week concludes with more potential for indulgence and also an opportunity to take responsibility for the indulgence.

On the 8th, Mercury moves back into Leo, and immediately fosters a sense of public performance together with weird or strange communications. It will be important to be mindful on the 8th 9th and 10th, as people may behave erratically; unexpected discomforts can arise. The 10th and 11th both have a potential for powerful forces to clash or be unleashed. On the 12th you may be feeling the Full Moon energy of the 13th, and on the 14th as well.

The 15th and 16th have a potential for sunny, pleasant and harmonious energies to arise. Making an effort to initiate action for a good cause on the 18th could lead to success, especially if the effort has been delayed for a while. The essence of a spiritual journey can arise on the 20th and 21st.

Deception is possible on the 22nd. The Sun's move into Virgo on the 23rd signals the onset of both practical thinking and a desire for order. There are interesting energies on the 24th and 25th, when obstacles around earlier and everything smoothes out in some profound way later on. On the 26th Mercury turns direct, but not until early evening.

On the 27th and 28th, there is an opportunity to enhance wealth or discover it by digging. The New Moon on the 28th sheds its light most helpfully on those who want to begin making improvements in their lives. The 29th and 30th might bring either unexpected rewards or a delay of rewards, depending.

August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days.

This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar, which started in March about 750 BC under Romulus. It became the eighth month either when January and February were added to the beginning of the year by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC or when those two months were moved from the end to the beginning of the year by the decemvirs about 450 BC (Roman writers disagree). It was renamed in honor of Augustus in 8 BC because several of the most significant events in his rise to power, culminating in the fall of Alexandria, which fell in this month. August originally had 29 days in the Roman Republican calendar, but two days were added to it by Julius Caesar beginning 45 BC giving it its modern total of 31 days. Augustus did not take a day from February when Sextilis was renamed in his honor.
