August

The month of August is a relatively quiet one, with aspects emphasizing positive change and the return of Mercury to forward motion. Two full Moons bracket the month, Expanding the spirit of concern and compassion. We can make New Moon wishes* on the 17th from noon on for 24 hours. We might wish to discover new ways to express our creativity or make wishes around children or romance.

We begin the month in Leo, expanded and happy. A lovely Full Moon in Aquarius greets us as well on August 1st. It helps bring together groups and/or friends in an effort to be of service. The 1st and 2nd will also prove to be happy times with a jolly Jupiter aspect leading the way. Moon in compassionate Pisces for the next several days brings those in need to our attention.

On the 7th Venus enters loving Cancer and families are uppermost in our hearts. On the 8th Mercury makes its station and goes direct. We can begin things now without fear of postponement or collapse. On the 9th a dreamy aspect could inspire us to make music or listen to it. Moon in versatile Gemini gets us going with discussions and projects.

On the 14th and 15th choices to be made could put us between a rock and a hard place. We had best be careful not to take on more of an obligation than is reasonable. On both the 15th and the 16th choices made could also prove unstable or outrageous. The New Moon in Leo on the 17th brings a fresh start to romance, children's concerns, and fun to be had.

On the 18th great ideas abound! Or you might start out in one direction and find yourself serendipitously going in another. The 20th brings an energetic day for all, while the 22nd sees the Sun leave gracious Leo for fussy Virgo. There is a fine aspect for creativity that day also. On the 23rd Mars moves into Scorpio where it is very much at home, and incisive action is possible. Avoid decisions on the 23rd and the 24th because of a potential  lack of clarity.

The 25th and 26th would be good days to be kind to people who are ill or limited in their movement. The 29th brings out the desire and the ability to make significant changes. The month ends with another Full Moon, this time in Pisces, while Mercury takes up residence in Virgo, making kindness and caring for others almost a given for us all.

*For New Moon wishes, write down on a piece of paper three wishes for the period of time from the this new Moon to the next, using as a focus the sign the Moon is in (always the same sign as the Sun.) In Leo the focus is on romantic love, children, games and hobbies and creativity. Happy wishing!

August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days.

This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because it was the sixth month in the ancient Roman calendar, which started in March about 750 BC under Romulus. It became the eighth month either when January and February were added to the beginning of the year by King Numa Pompilius about 700 BC or when those two months were moved from the end to the beginning of the year by the decemvirs about 450 BC (Roman writers disagree). It was renamed in honor of Augustus in 8 BC because several of the most significant events in his rise to power, culminating in the fall of Alexandria, which fell in this month. August originally had 29 days in the Roman Republican calendar, but two days were added to it by Julius Caesar beginning 45 BC giving it its modern total of 31 days. Augustus did not take a day from February when Sextilis was renamed in his honor.
