Heartwings Love Notes 1001 - Fall is on the Way

Heartwings says, "Let us celebrate the change of seasons."

The change of seasons has begun. I noticed it first in late August. I was traveling to Westborough near the end of old Westborough Road, when by the side of the road a branch of red leaves flamed among the green. When we lived on Warren St. I had a window from which each fall I would see the same thing: the first stroke of autumn's paintbrush telling me the changes had begun.

Fall is my favorite season. I enjoy the crisper air, my appetite perks up, and I can wear my nice sweaters and the warm clothes I am fond of. It is associated in my mind with newness. As a child, I enjoyed the fresh new notebooks and school supplies, unbroken crayons, sharp pencils. Late on when I was a mom, I sewed dresses for the first day of school for my little girls. Now I enjoy watching the leaves turn, some slowly, others later on almost overnight.

On our calendars, autumn began on the 22nd. Then there's the ancient Celtic calendar which has fall beginning on August 1st or 2nd, and the equinox as mid fall. In certain respects, all calendars aside, to me fall is a state of mind. It is a season of change, of transition. For some it begins when children start back to school. For others, Labor Day marks its beginning. In Australia it's spring, also season of transition.

Here in New England the long days of summer have shortened. The green of the leaves has darkened, and their freshness has dwindled. They look tired, even faded, hanging listlessly. Birds are eating more. Perhaps they are stocking up for a trip. With seasonal change, animals' fur thickens. Humans go shopping get their warm things out of storage.

I appreciate my food more. As the weather cools off, I do more cooking and baking as well as eating. It's fun to try new recipes. I have little to no interest in cooking or baking during the summer heat. Better yet, it's fun to snuggle under the feather quilt, back on the bed. I know many will experience the onset of fall with regret, but for me, the change of season is welcome.

May you enjoy your fall days to the fullest.
