Heartwings Love Notes 1005 - Holiday Gifting can be tricky

Heartwings says, "Choosing to please another may not work well."

When I was young and wanted to give my parents gifts for Christmas, I ordered from a mail order catalog. One year I bought them bridge table ashtrays. They were triangular to fit nicely on the table and cost a whole dollar. That was a lot for me to spend. There was only the one catalog and it was in black and white, a far cry from today's colorful pages crowded with alluring holiday items.

Our holiday catalogs have begun to arrive, filing our little mail box. They are sandwiched between appeals from places I contribute to and new ones. I received an appeal today from people that paint by holding a brush in their mouths. It included holiday cards they had painted. It's hard to believe they could create these intricate images with no hands.

These catalogs are filled with a variety of beautifully photographed, expensive gifts. Stephen was paging through one such and asked me if I would like an electric skillet. "Yes," I said, and "no," I continued. "I have precious little free counter space and what I do have must be preserved for food preparation." He continued showing me and offering to buy me different items he fancied I might like.

The food was the most tempting. Sadly, although one can find sugar free delights, there is nothing of a sweet nature except candy that is gluten free. Being diabetic, I do not want candy, and being gluten free, cakes and cookies made with wheat flour aren't suitable either. Then there is the clothing, not to mention the shoes and the slippers. Stephen was determined to find me something. He pointed out all kinds of wonderful garments, not to mention slippers in a variety of styles and colors.

After forty-four years together," he said, "you'd think I'd be able to find you something for the holidays." He smiled ruefully. "You're impossible to buy for, and I don't dare try to surprise you for fear you won't like what I get you." I felt badly for him. It's true, I seem to have grown rather particular these days. Perhaps I need to ease up and forget about being so choosey. I might try it when the next batch of catalogs arrives. However, suppose I don't like what he gets me? To be sure, he is equally particular, and I find myself in a similar conundrum when it comes to finding things for him.

May your gift giving prove successful and happy for all.
