Heartwings Love Notes 1008 - When There's No More

Heartwings says, "We cannot anticipate the unexpected."

For many years I've kept a small jar in my kitchen cupboard that contained a very special snack: Maple sugar pecans. I would purchase several of the small packages of 10 or 12 from my favorite health food store and eat them sparingly, one or two at a time, for a treat. Recently having only one package left, I thought I'd get some more. There weren't any. "When will you be getting more in," I asked the store owner. She shook her head and looked sad.

"They went out of business," she said. I was shocked. How could this be? I've had other nuts that have been prepared with a sweetener but these were better than any I have ever had. I never dreamed my cherished treat would one day vanish. How foolish of me! One of my favorite teachers used to say, "the only constant is change."

This is so true, and yet it seems we never expect it. I remember on a long-ago day I was walking with Stephen in the woods near where we lived at the time. We came across some young boys riding their bikes in a cleared area. They were whooping and hollering and doing wheelies. I hailed one and said, "Are they building here?" "Oh no, came the response. Nothing's happening here, this is where we meet." Perhaps a month or two later, we saw that building had begun and their playground was gone.

I just read somewhere that we may possibly know how much money we have yet we cannot know how much time we have. Even as I set the timer for the tea leaves to brew, I cannot know how long that four minutes will take in terms of my perception. Time is a subjective experience. Time spent waiting feels much longer than time spent in an enjoyable conversation. Then too, as one person put it, the years are short but the days are long. Well, I agree the years are short but the days? Not long enough for me, especially now there's less and less daylight each day.

How long will I last? I have no way of knowing. Whenever I see someone or go somewhere it could be the last time I will see him or her or be there. I think of that occasionally, not with a morbid sense of sadness or dismay, but of wondering, and of reminding myself to take more note of that present moment. If possible, I want to have no regrets, when my days on this earth come to an end, and I hope to feel I have made the most of my time.

May you make all your moments count as you live them.
