Heartwings Love Notes 969 - A Valentine for Lost Loves

Heartwings says, "Those we have loved and lost remain dear to us in memory."

There are those I dearly wish I could send a valentine to, yet cannot. The post office does not deliver to heaven, where they now reside. One of them made the collage I admire so often as I come up the stairs to our apartment. It is by a late former neighbor. An image of a fairy in a lovely background, it hangs next to a plant that she had given to me when she moved. She was one of our dearest friends in the apartment building where at one time we both lived.

At her request, Stephen had given her a few lessons in collage and she took to it with great joy, turning out many wonderful pictures and improving as she did so. Eventually she had several exhibitions of her work on the walls of a local restaurant. To her delight she even sold some. After her move to a rest home, she would call us promptly at nine o'clock each morning but Sunday for a chat. How I miss those chats. She came to all of our parties and even to those of our friends. She was very popular. Everyone enjoyed her wonderful stories.

Her smiling face graces a spot in my kitchen. When I catch a glimpse of her,

I smile back. Though she had many health challenges she survived them all until in her late nineties, when she finally just wore out. She was a wonderful inspiration to me, and I often think of her and her cheerful attitude as she soldiered on through her various physical difficulties. She is one of a handful of dear ones I think of and send up a prayer of gratitude for, for their presence in my life.

At one time I used to make valentines and mail them to family and friends. It was a great pleasure to do, and I enjoyed the creativity. That was before various computer chores took up my time and energy. Now at least I can send ecards to most. However, those that I have loved and lost are beyond valentines of any sort. Perhaps instead I can send to my love with my thoughts to her and to others. I don't have pictures of all of them except for her, so on this Valentine's Day I will smile at her photo and blow her a kiss. As I do so, I will be remembering our good times together and feeling ever so grateful to have known and loved her.

May you have dear ones to remember with joy even if you miss them.
