Heartwings Love Notes 974 - Intrusive Advertising

Heartwings says: "The voices saying, 'Buy, buy, buy," get louder and louder."

I picked up the fortune cookie left from our last takeout Chinese dinner. "Open it," Stephen said. I did, and took out the slip of paper with the fortune on it. I read it aloud, chuckled, and was about to put it down when I noticed writing on the other side. I turned it over and discovered an advertisement for a tax preparation firm together with a suggestion: "Ask the in-laws to move in. They may be tax deductible." There was also one of those ubiquitous black boxes with the designs one photographs with one's cell phone, to be guided to a web site.

Checking the backs of other, older fortune cookie slips we still had, I found only blank paper or a Chinese language lesson. I was somewhat taken aback. Here too? Is nothing ad free? Anyone who uses a computer is inundated with ads. They are on the edges of one's screen menus, one's lists of emails, and surround whatever one wants to explore that might be of interest. Of course, no magazine is without them, and I'm used to that, but fortune cookies? What will they think of next? Toilet paper? Paper towels? Those little cloths used for cleaning and dusting? Or maybe the(to me) evil smelling sheets that go into the dryer to soften the clothes!

It's not easy to ignore these intrusions into my life, not to mention my consciousness. When I was on my typewriter, it was different. Times have changed and company advertising has become ever cleverer and more persistent. As a writer I need to use my computer frequently. It takes great self discipline to ignore all the comes at me constantly without much I can do about it. My experience is not unusual I know. My son-in-law was speaking the other day about all the mail that comes to him from what appears to be legitimate sources marked "urgent, or open at once." He has to waste time opening what turns out to be trash.

There is so much to read coming to us all from all sides. Information overload is real. With my inquiring mind, I find it difficult not to pursue the plethora of interesting facts and stories displayed everywhere on my computer screen. It's also very distracting, and usually a complete waste of time. It used to be that catalogues arrived in the mail by the dozens. They still do, however, now my email as well as Stephen's is filling up with advertisements for anything I might have taken a look at in an idle moment. Apparently Big Brother really is watching me, and a delayed 1984 has arrived in 2021.

May you be able to screen out what is intrusive and feel comfortable.

PS How do you cope? How do you feel about all that? I'd Love to hear your views. Email me at Tashahal@aol.com and for more Love Notes on a variety of subjects, check out my web pages at Heartwings and friends.com
