Introduction To Collage:
(All Ages)
A series of small ongoing group or private classes
with award winning collage artist Stephen Halpert.
-
Turn your recycling into art.
-
Discover your artistic eye as you evoke wonderful original imagery from everyday objects around you.
-
Rummage your basement and attic, gather images, newspaper and magazine pages, old calendars, photographs, even colorful pieces of packaging.
-
All you'll need is a good pair of scissors.
Participate with award winning collage artist Stephen Halpert in exciting, easy, and fun classes enabling you to see and evoke imagery in a totally new and different way.
Participants will discover fascinating ways to play and make art with colors and shapes: to create dynamic new pictures from recycled paper scraps, photographs, and images from magazines, calendars, post cards and even snippets of cloth and appropriate found objects.
Modern day collage was born in the Parisian studio of Braque and Picasso during the first decade of the 20th century. The world was in upheaval; world war was imminent and a new experimental art form was born. Rather than limiting their canvases exclusively to paint Braque, Picasso, and later members of the Dada and Surrealist movements used a variety of sources including colorful illustrations on paper and cardboard, as well as photo montage and small found objects to initiate not only vivid anti war statements but a startling new art form as well.
With the guidance of award winning collage artist Stephen Halpert, a practicing and exhibiting collage artist since 1996, participants will learn cutting, gluing and finishing techniques, as well as helpful "do's and don'ts" from his experience. Participants will learn new skills, have fun and best of all have original works of art of their own creation.
● COLLAGE FOR KIDS (Ages 7 and up)
A fun filled beginners experience! Kids age 7 and upward will have the
opportunity to create their own original collages drawn from recycled magazines,
calendars, old photographs, post cards, greeting cards, snippets of cloth and
other paper and cardboard scraps, even small everyday found objects like bottle
caps, beads, even small plastic toys, polished stones, and colored glitter.
Led by award winning artist Stephen Halpert and beginning with a series of easy
exercises enabling them to learn about color shape, and perspective, kids will
discover exciting new ways to create pictures. They will create their own
special name portrait from scraps as well as take home works of art of their own
creation.
Stephen will provide glue sticks, heavy cardboard for layouts and gluing, glossy
Mod Podge for finishing and sealing, and some old magazines and paper for
cutting; kids are asked to bring to class their own pair of scissors as well as
whatever recycled paper, photographs and assorted small objects they wish to
integrate into their collages.
● DECORATIVE ARTS USING COLLAGE (Adult)
An introductory adult workshop in collage technique and execution. Beginning
with a brief historic overview participants may follow the same path of such
artists as Picasso and Braque and either work on traditional canvases or
recreate small pieces of furniture (coffee or side tables, chests), boxes,
screens or other three dimensional objects into works of original art. Here is
an innovative inexpensive way to refurbish an eyesore into a treasure to be
displayed and appreciated in one's home or office.
