January

The New Year begins with a New Moon in Capricorn, an auspicious beginning for the New Year.  Much having to do with business and politics may get a fresh start in this new year. During these first two weeks until the Full Moon, focus on issues to do with getting organized and initiating any planned projects. Sun conjunct Pluto on this day emphasizes change that comes from a renewal or rebirth. There may also be an additional energy from a Sun square Mars the next day that could add an element of stress.

The rest of this first week moves along smoothly with some helpful Jupiter aspects and several other opportunity boosts occurring between the 1st and the 8th. Plan to embrace generosity and charitable giving as well as educational opportunities.  During the second week, there is a cluster of aspects around the 11th that could be very helpful, leading up to the Full Moon on the 15th. Use the opportunity to connect with and resolve issues that arise around what you want versus what you need.

Mercury is the only planet besides the Sun that changes signs this month, which it does twice, first moving into Aquarius on the 11th.  This implies a special emphasis on inventive thinking and communication, new ideas for accomplishing goals, and new or unusual friends or social groups forming or available. Focus on expanding your circle of friends and look for new ways to connect with organizations that work for a better world. For this second week of the New Moon, focus on expanding your business if you are so inclined.

The Full Moon in Cancer on the 15th suggests emphasis on family and nurturing. The next two weeks would be a good time to go through your pantry and eliminate any out dated or no longer needed items--your local food bank can use what you can't if still good. The Sun enters Aquarius late on the 19th. This shortest of signs suggests focusing on including what is new or unusual in your life. Try foods, destinations or styles you haven't before. Experiment by trying new ways to do what you've always done.

The week following is pretty quiet until the Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th, when a combination of aspects suggests moving ahead while encountering obstacles. We have another New Moon this month as well, in Aquarius, on the 30th.  Focus on increasing your inventiveness and expand into new and untried opportunities as they occur. Changes can be made for the best that day and the next. Mercury into Pisces on the 31st signals mental focus on compassion and expanded intuition. Also on the 31st, Venus turns direct and choices, partnerships and beautification projects  that have been delayed or blocked can now be facilitated.

Holidays and Other Cool Events brought to you by Doc Dingley

In Finnish, the month is called tammikuu, meaning month of the oak, but the original meaning was the month of the heart of winter, as tammi has initially meant axis or core. In Czech this month is called leden, meaning ice month. In Ukrainian it is січень meaning cutting or slicing perhaps referring to the wind. Similarly, in Croatian January is called siječanj, also meaning cutting or slicing. In Sámi it is known as ođđajagimánnu, meaning simply "new year's month".

According to Theodor Mommsen (The History of Rome, volume 4, The Revolution, ISBN 1-4353-4597-5, page 4), the first of January became the first day of the year in 600 AUC of the Roman Calendar (153 BC), due to disasters in the Lusitanian War. A Lusitanian chief called Punicus, invaded the Roman territory, defeated two Roman governors and slew their troops. The Romans resolved to send a consul to Spain and, in order to accelerate the despatch of aid, "they even made the new consuls enter on office two months and a half before the legal time" (15th of March).

Various Christian feast dates were used for the New Year in Europe in the Middle Ages, including March 25 and December 25. However, medieval calendars were displayed in the Roman fashion of twelve columns from January to December. Beginning in the 16th century, European countries began officially making January 1 the start of the New Year once again — sometimes called Circumcision Style because this was the date of the Feast of the Circumcision, being the 8th day from December 25

January 6th, Russian and Ukrainian Christmas Eve, also known as Svyat Vechir

January 7th, Russia - Christmas Day Christmas celebration in Russia is not as widely followed as in Western countries in favor of the New Year celebration. Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January (which corresponds to 25th December in the Julian Calendar). The tradition of celebrating Christmas has been revived since 1992, after decades of suppression by the communist government. It is centered on the Christmas Eve "Holy Supper", which consists of 12 servings, one to honor each of Jesus' apostles. The Russian traditions were largely kept alive by shifting some of them, including the visit by gift-giving "Grandfather Frost" and his "Snowmaiden", to New Year's Day. Many current Russian Christmas customs, including their Christmas tree, or "yolka" (spruce, sometimes pine instead of it), were brought by Peter the Great, after his western travels in the late 17th century.
