Heartwings Love Notes 957 - Motivation, Resistance and Distraction

Heartwings says, "It's not easy to do what you need to do, when other tasks beckon."

I've been pondering a dilemma, and decided to share with my readers because I believe I am not alone in what troubles me: There is my to do list, there are my deadlines, and there is my voluminous computer email; and then there are the many not necessarily immediate tasks I never seem to get to. This is a source of great frustration. I remember from long ago a line from a Christian prayer: "I do those things which I would not do, and I do not do those things which I would do, and there is no health in me." I feel that way more than I would like to, and lately, because immediate circumstances have gobbled up my time, even more so.

The issue seems to revolve around resistance—not wanting to do whatever it is and thus putting it off, and the need for more or better motivation. Take exercise for instance. The necessity for it is paramount. Everything I have read lately about maintaining good health and longevity stresses it. So why don't I eagerly embrace it? Perhaps because it is boring, or perhaps not as easy as it used to be, or whatever comes to mind? Sadly, I can think of reasons, however that doesn't get me up and moving. There are many things I would rather do.

There can be rewards for doing it, or punishment for not doing it—deterioration being one--after all what you don't use you lose. Yet the chair, the couch or even the bed beckon and they feel so nice—nicer than huffing and puffing. Resistance has reared its ugly head and won't go away. To be sure, resistance has its virtues when applied judiciously—no, I won't eat those cookies because they have way too much sugar, but not when applied to exercise. To overcome it I plan to on focus on motivation, and on seeking ways to encourage exercise on a more regular basis. I do now have at my disposal a pedaling device that sits under my desk, and I plan to spend some time each day working on it. I can at least watch something on my computer while pedaling.

There is another difficulty that must be overcome: distraction. I may sit down to do a task on my list and then decide to just check my email. Two hours later the task is not done, the time allotted is gone and I have something else to do. Or else I go to do a task, get pulled way by a request or a phone call and again, nothing gets done. I am working to focus better, say "later" and stay with my original direction. Life is a constant learning process and I do my best to keep up. I trust my readers are doing the same.

May you find the time and energy to do what you need to do when you need to do i.

Blessings and best regards, Tasha Halpert
